uring the event, researchers, developers, and experts representing research institutions and industry to discuss the properties of the atomic layer deposition method (ALD), the possibilities of the Beneq industrial and research equipment, the problem of the introduction of new technologies in the industry as well as the benefits of the ESTO-Vacuum automated vacuum process equipment for sputtering, etching and deposition of various materials.
Atomic layer deposition technology
ALD is a promising nanotechnology, which can be applied in various industries, health care and other fields. For example, it allows you to create coatings significantly increasing the life of lithium-ion batteries, which protect the surface of a transistor against electrical and chemical effects of the environment, and also greatly increase the strength of the glass, that is quite useful in the manufacture of displays of spacecraft and in shipbuilding. The biocompatible ALD films can be used to modify the surface properties of the implants in contact with the tissues of human beings and to improve their mechanical and corrosion resistance. Such coatings may also inhibit the growth of bacteria in laboratory tanks, analytical instruments, biomedical engineering and biochips. The ALD film with a thickness of several nanometres is elastic, it does not crack, and it inhibits the formation and spread of harmful particles in the human body.
The Finnish company Beneq has developed a unique method to apply decorative and functional thin film coatings according to the ALD technology. Nanocoatings in the future will make it possible to produce flexible mobile devices, increase the protection of securities and banknotes. Thin film electroluminescent displays manufactured by the Beneq with the ALD technology are resistant to extreme conditions, the temperatures from -60 to 100°C, under the conditions of high humidity, salt fog, vibration and strong blows. For improvement of the technology the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" established a research laboratory for applying thin film coatings on the Beneq equipment (http://aldapplab.com/ru).
In September this year, Beneq reported another development, the nFOG wet coating technology developed for filming large optical elements. This new technology provides high-quality dip coating in combination with a high performance of the roll equipment.
Vacuum equipment
Since 2003 the Russian company ESTO-Vacuum has developed and manufactured the automated vacuum process equipment under the brand name Caroline designed for the deposition, etching, and sputtering of various materials. The equipment can be applied in various fields of science and industry for precision material processing, creating two- and three-dimensional nanoscale structures, as well as the processing of flat and cylindrical surfaces that are compatible with the roll technology. As long as technologies and design solutions get improved, the overall dimensions of the equipment get reduced, functionality expanded and accuracy improved.
ESTO-Vacuum has the centre for technological services, which provides technology validation services and low-value production. Validation of technologies may include transfer of the customer’s process to any new equipment, obtaining prototypes, technology development according to the terms of reference. The Centre’s equipment can be leased out in order to perform process operations required by the customer or implement the complete life cycle of low-volume output of products for areas such as microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems, nanoelectronics and nanoelectromechanical systems, optics, medicine, avionics, metalworking and tool industry, construction, design and production of advertising.
Integrated services
The Beneq and ESTO-Vacuum provides a comprehensive solution to the problems of the customers at their production facilities. The advantages of such a model for customers are as follows:
cost savings for the purchase of process equipment;
lack of personnel costs;
lack of costs for the rental of premises;
cost savings for the repair and rehabilitation of equipment;
enhancement of the investment attractiveness by reducing costs.
