Dockweiler is one of the world leaders in the production of precision stainless steel tubes and components of piping systems for semiconductor industry, chemistry, pharmaceutics, biotechnology and other high-tech industries. Founded in 1955 in Hamburg (Germany), the company at the turn of the century moved its headquarters to Neustadt-Glewe, located between Hamburg and Berlin. Dockweiler’s modern production facility of about 5,500 sq.m includes clean rooms of 200 sq.m (classes 4 and 6),
in which the surface treatment, welding, assembly and packaging of components are carried out, including of tubes and fittings for the electronic industry. Particularly noteworthy is the automated warehouse of an area of about 7,000 sq.m, in which hundreds of thousand dimension-types of products are stored. The company, which employs about 210 people, is represented worldwide by subsidiaries and more than 30 distributors. Torsten Matt, Specialist of the Sales Department, told about features of Dockweiler’s products.
Mr. Matt, what are the advantages of tubes made by Dockweiler for using in the semiconductor industry?
Our company has a number of know-how in the field of surface treatment and welding. In particular, advanced technological developments have been used in electrochemical polishing. The electropolishing facility employs 40 people, i.e. approximately one fifth of the personnel of the company, and it has own clean rooms of an area of about 80 sq.m. Achieved surface roughness is not more than 0.25 μm, and on special request – not more than 0.13 μm. Also we use special technology of orbital welding, which provides improved reliability of joining. Length of welded structures can reach up to six meters. Components are made of special stainless steels and delivered with the required cleanliness class.
What are the main areas of technological development?
We improve the technologies of surface treatment and joining of tubes and fittings, as well as develop new solutions and new series of products. For example, new developments are corrugated hoses Flextron and connection system ZeroCon.
Flextron, like tubes, is made of stainless steel, can be electropolished and meets the most stringent requirements of semiconductor industries and fine chemical technologies. Corrugated hoses can be easily connected to both new and already in service media supply systems. For traceability the needle marking can be used.
ZeroCon is a unique patented connection system that is as tight as a weld seam. The system has a simple structure and consists of four components: screw joint, pressure joint, seal and nut. ZeroCon is versatile, easy to install, requires no maintenance and ensure the combination of the advantages of detachable and welded joints.
How relevant for your company is the problem of price competition with manufacturers from China?
We are the technology leader in our market segment and offer our customers an exceptionally high level of quality that can’t provide most of competitors, particularly tube manufacturers from Eastern Asia. This is confirmed by the fact that among our customers are leading Chinese companies of the semiconductor industry and other innovative industries.
Which projects implemented with the participation of company, would you like to note?
We are proud that our tube systems are used in the experimental stellarator Wendelstein 7-X built in Greifswald (Germany) by the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics. If scientists will solve the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion and will provide mankind with cheap electricity, having created power plants on the basis of stellarators, it will be the achievement also of our company. In Russia in cooperation with our distributor, ABS Service, we have participated in several projects at the microelectronics factories in Zelenograd.
